About this activity

Mountfitchet Castle is an open-air museum where you'll travel back in time over 900 years ago and witness what life was really like in the medieval Motte and Bailey castle!

You'll be able to explore the castle freely and roam through the Norman village hidden behind the castle walls. You can wander in as many houses as you like and really immerse yourself in the past! There are lots of tame and very friendly Fallow deers that you can meet and feed too and they roam freely around the site.

In total, it's set on a ten acre site and they have animals roaming freely too they they rescue locally. The animals are the same breeds that the Normans woud have kept within the grounds too!

The motte and bailey lay forgotten for over 750 years but in 1975 that's when it was rebuilt to reveal the original earthworks and mounds.

People were drafted in to recreate the metal world, woodworks and more and was a very intrivate job to get the area looking like it was years and years ago.

Onsite you'll also find the Toy Museum, so make sure to give that a visit and see what toys have changed over the years!
