Rye House Gatehouse was one of the first brick built houses in the country, and was a structure that was meant to project power, prestige and wealth. The site is open on selected dates of the year and is a great day out for the family.
You'll see the details and craftmanship in the oriel windows and stonework. You can also climb the winding stairs to the viewing platform and appreciate the amazing twisting chimney! The gatehouse dates back to 1443 and has been home to royalty, ghosts and even an assasination attempt!
The gatehouse is a great 1 listed building, with quality brickwork and even a string of underground chambers and dungeons! Whilst you're here, why not visit the nearby Rye House Quay which is a great spot to have a picnic!
The Rye House has nearly 600 years of history, with paranormal activity too! The gatehouse is all that remains of the brick built manor house is considered to be one of the finest examples of the period in Hertfordshire.
Theres a car park on site, but the easiest way is by train from Rye House station on the Liverpool Street line (2 minute walk).
