Welwyn Roman Baths will allow you to see the layout of a once private villa for local farmers! See how the Romans used to operate hot and cold baths and how the heating works, which is similar to what saunas are like today! There hasn't been a boiler for 2,000 years, but you can still imagine what life was like back then!
The baths date back to the third century and were discovered in 1960. A vault was then created from steel to put over the baths so the public could see the baths, but only part of them are visible due to the motorway!
There are lots of rooms to visit still. The cold room, called the frigdarium, the warm room, known as the tepidarium, the hot room called caldarium and the hypcaust that was built from opus signium. There are also objects here too that explains what Roman life was life. There is a free audio tour and a film about the excavation which helps give you a bit more context and insight into how they rescued the baths alongs the motorway.
Fancy a bit of dressing up? There is a small dress up area, along with a space to have a go at grinding spices and quizzes so you can test your knowledge!
Visitors are allowed to visit the baths everyday from morning to dusk. Access is via a tunnel set in the motorway embankment and a your walk along the entrance features original roman tiles!
From junction 6 of A1M follow signs to Welwyn (not Welwyn Garden City) and you will pick up the brown heritage signs with a roman helmet on. Lookout for signs at a five barred gate on a small roundabout just before you go into Welwyn itself.
