Edinburgh Castle is one of the oldest fortified places in Europe. With a long rich history as a royal residence, military garrison, prison and fortress, it is alive with many exciting tales. When you climb Castle Hill, the family will be walking in the footsteps of past kings and queens, as well as soldiers, and even the odd pirate or two!

Some of Edinburgh Castle remains in military use, however really the castle is now a world-famous visitor attraction, and part of the Old and New Towns of Edinburgh World Heritage Site!

There are many ways to experience Edinburgh Castle with the family. You can head to the area's you're most excited about, or follow an itinerary, or perhaos allow an audio guide to show you around!

Don't miss a visit to the Great Hall. The Great Hall is a wonder of medieval Scotland, and was actually completed in 1511 for King James IV. (Who became James I of England!) The wooden roof of the Great Hall is one of the most superb in the whole of the UK.

Look up to see the giant beams which rest on stones carved with heads and symbols such as the thistle – a badge of Scotland.

Also at Edinburgh Castle you can visit St Margaret’s Chapel and the One o’clock Gun.
