About this activity

Richmond Castle has breathtaking views of the Yorkshire Dales and is one of the finest tourist attractions in North Yorkshire. It's one of the greatest Norman fortresses in Britain and has lots of history around every corner.

At the castle, the garden which is known as the cockpit is outside the castle walls. It's just over an acres and is linked by a cobbled path all the way round. There is reference to 16 conscientious objectors who were imprisoned during the First World War.

It's a great plan to meet, lay, have picnics and get outside in nature. There's lots of trees and colourful wildflowers and makes for a relaxing rest stop after your visit around the castle.

The castle itself towers above the river Swale in the heart of the Yorkshire Dales and has been there since 1070s and there's lots to discover.

Explore the might tower and learn more about the power of the castle and head around the permanent exhibition that tells the story of the people and history.

In this space you'll learn about the castle's history from the 11th century to the First World War. There's also lots of objects on display too, and an interactive area to help tell the little visitors the stories and about the famous characters.
