Barnard Castle is set on a high rock above the River Tees and takes its name from its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. You'll enjoy fantastic views over the Tees Gorge and there's plenty to do for families on a day out.
On your visit try and spot Richar's boar emblem, carved above a window in the inner ward or play and run around on the lawns that have sapling fruit trees. There's plenty of opportunities to unleash your imagination, get outside and admire the castle and stunning views over the Tees Gorge.
Outside there's lots of room to run and play ball games, just remember to be considerate of other visitors too!
At the site, they have lots of pinic areas to have a bite to eat, whilst admiring the views and there's cold drinks, ice-creams and snacks available onsite too.
There's a shop selling a selecting of English Heritage gifts and toys and books that you can remember your visit by! Make sure to bring a camera and take some photos of the expansive views too!
No car parking available at the site. Nearest parking (not managed by English Heritage) is located in the town itself.
