About this activity

Did you know that buried deep under the impressive and iconic mountains of Snowdonia lies an extraordinary story, and a story that YOU can be part of!

We're talking about Llechwedd Slate Caverns!

The story of Llechwedd Slate Caverns started around 500 million years ago, so yes kids, that's a very long time. Then, did you know that slate was actually used by the Romans in the 1st C AD and then by medieval kings, as a way to shore up their defence?

Slate really does have a lot of history! Once the Industrial Revolution started, the demand for slate skyrocketed, and the slate industry in Wales exploded.

It's THIS history that you can be part of at Llechwedd’s Slate Mountain Adventure and Deep Mine Tour!

You can start your experience with an exhilarating ex-military truck ride to the highest peaks of the 2,000 acre site, visiting some quarries, and taking in the amazing views on the Slate Mountain Adventure.

Don't miss a stop at the main visitor centre, before you can descend 500 ft below the ground on what is actually Europe’s steepest cable railway, deep into the Llechwedd Deep Mine.

On the Deep Mine Tour you can see chambers that were all hand carved over the centuries, and learn stories of the actual miners who worked there.
