Dolaucothi Gold Mines is the UK's only known Roman Gold Mine and dates back over 2,000 years! The pre-booked guided tours will help you unveil the secrets of Roman mining as you go underground into the mine and explore it for youself!
The tours of the mine start from the 1930s mine yard where you'll see the buildings and machinery dating back from that time. The tour involved steps and sttep slopes so remember to wear suitable clothing for the trip!
The mines are on a vast area of woodlands with lots of footpaths for you to explore the surrounding area. The estate covers over 2,500 acres in total and there's 25km of trails from gentle strolls to upland trails.
Tour of the Roman mine takes you through rare Hay Scented Buckler Fern and a strong bat presence. You'll be able to get up close and personal with the wildlife in the mines too. You'll most likely find the European Cave Spider as they live in dark places but they are camouflaged so may be tricky to spot!
The mines are also a haven for bats too, so see what you can spot! The bats are usually the size of a small pear and they're the largest British bat species in the mines.
On site there is a field centre which is a comfortable space for relaxing and finding out about the history of the area as well as relaxing with some refreshments!
