British Schools Museum is your chance to learn about the long and hard path to free education! Experience a Victorian lesson, tour the site and even head to the Headmaster's House to discover what school was like in the past!
Theres a vast collection of objects and more that all tell the story of early education and childhood. From reparing lessons to childhood toys and clothing, there is so much to discover and explore. Don't forget, they have lots of exhibitions too. Some previous exhibitions include Sunday Schools, preparing girls for life which showcases amazing needlework and an exhibition where you can explore the secret lives of Hertfordshire writers.
Did you know they're also home to the last Monitorial Schoolroom in the world?!
They also offer a variety of school programmes too that will support and extend knowledge and skills for students from year one and upwards! They'll take part in role-play, object handling and demonstration lessons to help discover what life and education would have been like years ago.
You can also enjoy an illustrated talk at the museum. Some include A School at War which highlights how the Great War affected one small school in one small towen and Talking in Class which goes through the sights, sounds and smells of school life in the early 20th century.
There's always something happening in the museum too. From craft workshops to tours and yoga, just check out their events calendar on the website to see what's happening when you visit.
The British Schools Museum is opposite the ASDA supermarket in Hitchin.
By road, take the Stevenage North exit from the A1(M) and follow the A602 towards Hitchin. Take the 4th exit at the ‘Three Moorhens’ roundabout. At the bottom of the hill take the 2nd exit at the roundabout and the museum is about 200 meters on the right hand side of the road.

They welcome school visits for a chance to experience life in a Victorian classroom!
The majority of the site is accessible to wheelchair users. A parking space can be arranged but please phone in advance.
