About this activity
Tropical Birdland is where some of the most beautiful, and colourful birds from the most beautiful of areas in the world, all come together to give YOU an amazing day out with them!
There is so much to see and do at Tropical Birdland, make sure you allow enough time AND take your camera - there are some incredible bird species ready to say hi!
The Parrot Path is a great place where kids can get up close to interact with the birds. But keep a keen eye, as some of the naughty birds love to steal jewellery!
At Tropical Birdland you can see some soft-billed birds are housed in the main walk through aviary, which is always a highlight for kids! See how many different birds you can spot!
The Flamingos are often a highlight too, and you can even sit and enjoy a picnic as you watch the flock share their large pond with a merry gang of Orinoco Geese!
Deep along your trail you might just happen upon the Birdland Barracks, where kids will find the impressive The Military Macaws. These veterans are patiently awaiting your tributes to their service (usually this means a big walnut or juicy grape!
Another spot at Tropical Birdland that kids love is the play area. Parents can sit back and relax with a cuppa and something to eat whilst those little ones play until their heart's content!
With aq beautiful natural woodland to explore too, surrounded by native wildlife, trees and shrubs, as well as amazing bird life including woodpeckers, kingfishers, and jays, there is nothing quite like the magic of nature, and it's all celebrated at Tropical Birdland!

They have a free car park.
From M1 get off at junction 22, on roundabout take the A50 signed towards Markfield. They have brown Tourism signs thereafter. From the M69 go to the end then take M1 North and get off at junction 21a.
Follow the signs to Kirby Muxloe and just before you reach Kirby Muxloe you will see signs to Desford. In Desford, continue up to the mini island and turn right down Main Street. Follow the sharp bend left and then take 1st right down Lindridge Lane towards Merrylees. Tropical Birdland’s entrance is on the left hand side.
There are brown Tourism signs located in Desford village and also on the A47 Hinckley Road, Leicester and A50 Markfield island in Leicester

Tropical Birdland FAQ’s
They have baby changing facilities at the car park toilets.
There is a cafe where you can grab hot and cold snacks plus drinks, but the hot food stops 1 hour before close
The birds at Tropical Birdland love a little treat and you can buy these on the main entrance. The most popular of these treats are peanuts and walnuts so be aware of this when purchasing food in the case of allergies.
Before you head home, stop by gift shop at Tropical Birdland and pick up everything from pocket money presents to more expensive items, all to remember your visit by!
They have baby changing facilities at the car park toilets.
You can take your own healthy food and enjoy it at the lovely open & sheltered area near the real macaw café.
They have compacted gravel paths around the garden and concrete on their parrot path. The gardens, cafe, gift shop and parrot path are all at ground level and there are accessible toilets.
All bird perching on the parrot path are at different levels for wheelchair accessibility
It's worth noting that whilst close is 4pm, the birds start to go in at 3:30pm
