Whitby Abbey is an atmospheric ruined Abbey standing prominently above Whitby and has been inspiring visitors for years! Discover the stories of saints, poets and Dracula as you exploring the gothic ruins with beautiful stunning sea views all around.
For nearly 700 years, the gothic abbey has towered above Whitby and was first founded in AD 657. Centuries of weather and war have left their mark on the area, and there's lots of history to explore.
You'll follow in the footsteps of many creative people as you walk through history. Including religious leaders, artists, writers and poets that have all be inspired by the abbey.
Once you've explored outside, you can take a look inside the visitor centre and museum. Inside, the museum tells the story of the abbey with the help of objects like the Anglo-Saxon crosses, medieval manuscripts and even a signed copy of Dracula!
For families, there's a variety of family events for everyone to get involved in!
You can experience the story of Dracula and imagine yourself back in time with the interactive Dracula performance that takes place during the holidays.
Count the 199 steps to the abbey, have a relaxing picnic or play hide and seek amongst the ruins, there's lots to do and see for the whole family.

The gift shop sells a range of delightful souvenirs, including items made of Whitby Jet, wine, books and many other English Heritage gifts
Step free access from parking to main site. Most of the site is covered in grass, however a smooth pathway covers some areas. Ramps are in place that lead up to and then through the ruins.
