The Trimontium Heritage Centre is one of the largest Roman fort sites north of Hadrians Wall. The museum is located in the heart of the Melrose and it's the only museum in Scotland dedicated to the Roman Iron Age.
In the museum you'll learn of the Romans relationship with the Scottish Borders and the local people. There's lots of artefacts to see too! Including military equipment, beads, shoes, jewellery and much more.
The fort site is accessible year round and is around one and a half miles east of Melrose. The site is an agricultural space and there's often guided walks on a regular basis throughout the summer.
Around the fort there are information boards, memorial stones and more that will guide you around and tell you the history of what the ground lies on.
The forst site walks are guided by the experience volunteers who will point out some interest points along the way. The wak is around five miles so make sure to wear suitable footwear!
Children can seek out missing Roman soldiers hiding around the museum and use clues to identify the items on display. They can even choose a treat at the end of their visit!
