A trip to the zoo with the family can be quite a magical experience - strolling through the grounds and encountering animals from all over the world. You can see your favorites, and even some that will surprise you!
Austin Zoo is no different. This fun Texas zoo has over 350 animals from over 100 species all waiting to make friends with you! It's a great way for kids to have amazing animal encounters, as well as learning all about their habits and habitats.

The aim of the zoo is to hep animals that need to be rescued or rehabilitated, so you know that all of the animals there are in a much better place for being in the zoo
Are you ready to meet some of the animals! There are many happy families at Austin Zoo - and we don't just mean yours! You see, creatures like tigers and lions belong to the Big Cat family, and snakes and lizards are from the reptile family. So as you go round, you can know that these creatures are part of a family just like you!
The Big Cat family includes leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, tigers, and those beautiful lions. But did you know that only the jaguar, tiger and lion can roar? Pretty incredible isn't it! (Here's a fun fact - the cheetah actually purrs like your pet cat would!)
The monkey family are often the cheekiest of the bunch! There are always so many amazing species - from the Capuchin Monkey to the Common Marmoset, learning about their story will fascinate kids

Did you think that Austin Zoo would have a train ride? Yep! You can enjoy a 20 minute ride in between enjoying the animals. Austin Zoo also have keeper talks, as well as story time sessions which are always fun for those little ones!

We are located 2.5 miles past the "Y" in Oak Hill on Hwy 290 West. From North IH 35, go south to exit 230 (that is the Johnson City exit). After taking that exit, you are on 290 West. Follow 290 for 15 miles. Turn right on Circle Drive and follow that for 1 1/2 miles. Turn right on Rawhide Trail and follow that down into the zoo.
 From Mopac North, take Mopac South to the 290 West exit. Follow 290 West for 10 miles. Turn right on Circle Drive and follow that for 1 1/2 miles. Turn right on Rawhide Trail and follow that down into the zoo. From Buda/ Kyle, go North on IH 35 to the Slaughter Lane exit and turn left. Follow it for 20 miles until it dead ends. At the dead end which is 1826, turn right. Follow 1826 down to the traffic light and turn left. That is 290 West. Follow 290 West to the next traffic light called Circle Drive, and turn right. Follow that for 1 1/2 miles. Turn right on Rawhide Trail and follow that down into the zoo. From Dripping Springs, take 290 East to Circle Drive (at the light and next to Buddy's Corner Store) and turn left. Follow Circle Drive for 1 1/2 miles. Turn right on Rawhide Trail and follow that down into the zoo.

The zoo rehabilitate and rescue animals. Some animals were laboratory research, some were abandoned and some weren't cared for properly. So they really are saving their lives!
There is a baby changing room available
They have a concession stand open Friday to Sunday, which sell drinks, snacks and shaved ice. Cash only.
Grab some animal food for $2.50 for the deer, llamas and goats!
What would a zoo be without a gift shop! Pick up books, educational toys, stuffed animals, and Hill country gifts.
They are happy to schedule field trips weekdays from 9:30am - 5pm. They offer check in times at 15 minute intervals.
There is a baby changing room available
Visitors are free to bring in their own food and drink to enjoy in the Picnic Grove. Then it can be as healthy as you like!
