About this activity

The Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester is a wonderful way to introduce the family to art, culture and of course - some incredible theatre!

In fact, since 1976 they have have opened their doors to the imaginations of theatre makers all across the UK and beyond.

The Royal Exchange Theatre is located in one of the most beautifuls in Manchester, and with one step inside your magical journey can begin!

You can feel the history of the building and the theatre as soon as you arrive, and the history of the Royal Exchange Theatre is as dramatic as the productions you'll see on stage!

The Great Hall was actually much greater - twice the size in fact. One considered "the largest room in the world", the huge space was once one of the leading centres in the world for cotton trade, right up until WWII and sadly the beautiful building took a direct hit during the Manchester Blitz.

The room was repaired and continued this trade until 1968, and a fun fact - if you look up you can actually see the original trading board with that days closing figures!

Today, you can see some of the best performances across the nation.  Some of the finest actors such as Albert Finney, Helen Mirren, Vanessa Redgrave, Hugh Grant and Kate Winslet have all graced the stage.

Beyond the productions, you can also enjoy workshops and other fun ways to get involved in a hands-on way.
