About this activity

IWM North in Manchester tells the stories of over a century of war, in an immersive experience. There's lots to discover through pernament displays, exhibitions and much more. The museum is an educational experience, so it's a great place to visit to learn all about war history. 

The main exhibition space features a timeline that guides you through key events of twentieth and twenty first century warfare. You'll see large objects from the collections, artistic impression and much more. There is a five chapters of conflict space which includes information on the First World War, Between the Wars, Second World War, Cold War and present wars. You can explore what it was like to live in a world war and the changing role of women too. 

You'll have the chance to get up close to thousands of objects too. Including the US Harrier which is supended above the entrance and explore field guns. The Big Picture Show is immersive and award-winning. It brings a range of perspective to life using surround sound, moving images all displayed every hour on the 27-foot high walls. 

Don't forget to see the iconic hand-crafted sculpture artwork, Poppies. They cascade down and are a permanent home at the museum and it's a great chance to reflect on how war has shaped our lives. 

There's also a variety of artworks on display too, where artists look at their own responses to war including artists such as Lowry, Roman Halter and Gerry Judah. 

For families there is a variety of activities. Every weekend they run a story seekers where you can discover real artefact and stories and learn about the global impact of conflict from the Second World War.

Leave the M60 at Junction 9 and join Parkway (A5081) towards Trafford Park. At the first island take the third exit onto Village Way; at the next island take the second exit onto Warren Bruce Road. Turn right at the T-junction onto Trafford Wharf Road. Alternatively, leave the M602 at Junction 3 and follow the signs.

IWM North FAQ’s

The IWM North Café serves homemade baked goods, Fairtrade tea and coffee and a selection of deli sandwiches and salads.

The gift shop offers a wide range of inspiring and unique gifts, from books, clothing and accessories to vintage posters, homeware, toys and souvenirs, all inspired by the collections and the stories they tell.

School groups can choose to take part in a variety of learning sessions, aimed at KS2-4 and led by one of the expert educators. Alternatively, groups can opt to explore the museum on a free self-guided visit.

IWM North is fully accessible by wheelchair. Six manual wheelchairs are available for loan on a first come first served basis. These are provided free of charge.
