About this activity

The Manchester Art Gallery has been long-standing for 200 years in Manchester City Centre and houses inclusive art for everyone to spark creativity and open minds to the wonders of art! There are over 46,000 objects of fine art, decorative art and costumes dating back from 200 years and is constantly growing and expanding. 

The fine art collection contains nearly 13,000 items which include paintings, sculptures, drawings, prints and much more which date back from the 1400s to the present day. If you're interested in 19th century British artists, then the gallery is well-known for it's displays, parcticularly the Pre-Raphaelites.

You'll also find the modern collection up to the end of the Second World War with artists such as Charles Rutherston, Gainsborough, Stubbs and many more. 

There's also a costumes area which ranges from the 1600s to the present day. Including pieces before the Second World War, and high-stree and designer clothing too. See what you can find and notice how much fashion has changed over the years! 

The gallery is a space where yong people can socialise, try out new creative activities and much more too. They run creative consultants which is an informal group for ages 14-19 years and they use art to explore ideas, address isues and much more. You don't need any experience in art, just the willingness to get involved!

There's also regular exhibitions, projects, workshops, tours and so much more held all year round! Just check out their events calendar on the website to find out what's happening where and when before you visit.

Manchester Art Gallery FAQ’s

There is a baby change cubicle in both the gendered toilet facilities adjacent to the Mosley Street entrance.

The Gallery Cafe has food, cakes and more made fresh on site!

We think you should be able to see everything in about 90 minutes, though you’re welcome to stay longer.

The gallery shop has a collection of art books, merchandise and more which is inspired by their collections.

The gallery has a number of activities and educational workshops throughout the year, so simply get in touch with them to visit.

There are wheelchair-accessible toilets in the ground floor Atrium area. In addition to this, there is a wheelchair-accessible toilet on the first floor by Gallery 16.
