The world famous JORVIK Viking Centre is an incredible destination to visit as a family - it's where kids can see with their very own eyes life in the Viking Age, and feel like they are actually LIVING 1,000 years ago!
JORVIK Viking Centre is one of the most famous and astounding discoveries of modern archaeology that the UK has really seen. In fact, it was between the years of 1976-81 archaeologists uncovered houses, workshops and even backyards of the Viking Age city of Jorvik, just as it stood nearly 1,000 years ago!
Kids can learn all about how before ‘The Viking Dig’, clues about what it was like to live in JORVIK were very few and far between. Most clues actuall came from objects found by chance when workmen laid foundations or were busy digging drains. At that point, only a handful of small-scale excavations had actually encountered Viking-Age remains, so there really wasn't much known.
Then, the excavation at Coppergate uncovered 40,000 different archaeological layers, and led to the discovery of over 250,000 pieces of pottery, as well as 5 tonnes of animal bone AND 40,000 equally fascinating objects!
All of this now can be learnt, and seen first hand, at JORVIK Viking Centre, and it can teach kids so much more in one day than they might even have thought they could learn!

The JORVIK Group is proud to offer educational visits to our attractions in York, including JORVIK Viking Centre, DIG: An Archaeological Adventure and Barley Hall!
The visit to JORVIK Viking Centre will last approximately 1 hour. Workshops last approximately 45 minutes.
As most of the attraction is underground, wheelchair access to the JORVIK Viking Centre is restricted to one wheelchair user in the building at any one time.
Jorvik Viking Centre offers free admission for carers. There is one standard accessible toilet in the first gallery of the attraction to the right as you exit the lift.
