About this activity

The Great Laxey Mine Railway is on the eastern coast of the Isle of Man and runs along the the surface section of the tramway which once carried lead and zinc from deep inside the mines. The railway starting point is located at the Valley Gardens and you'll travel in a tiny carriage, hauled by a replica steam engine.

You'll travel through the only railway tunnel along the line which once carried wagons with metal ores and there's plenty of information boards explaining the mining features along the way.

The Laxey Wheel is just a short walk from the terminus, and it's the largest working waterwheel in the world, so it's worth a visit for sure!

The train can be boarded at either end of the track and the station has been constructed on top of ston bunkers where the mined ore was stored. For Valley Gardens station you'll hav a great view overlooking the former Washing Floors too.

Visit the engine shed and carriage shed too, just don't cross the railway line and use the footpath. The carriages are very small so they fit through the tunnel and you will have to bend down to board!

You'll see miners cottages, beautiful scenery and more as you head to the summit of Snaefell. Part way up the line, you'll cross a small bridge over a stream and stops on the bank of Lazey river, so you can explore the area before hopping back on.
