About Peel Castle

Peel Castle sits on an islet near the harbour of Peel and offers panormaic views. It was originally a place of workship before becoming the fort of Magnus Barelegs who was an 11 century Viking King of Mann. 

The impressive castle was a royal residence, centre of government and military stronghold. You'll get the chance to wander through the grounds, enjoy the views and the audio guide will tell the history and stories of the castle and its people. 

The castle was constructed in the 11th century and stands on St Patricks's Isle  is an impressive feature The caslte isn't used today, but it still remains intacts and allows visitors to walk through history and explore the ruins of the Castle's cathedral and Round Tower. 

The castle has been the site of some historical finds too, including the 10th century grave of the Pagan Lady which has a well-reserved Viking necklace and silver coins. They're displayed at the Viking Gallery at the Manx Museum. 

Wander the walls and look out over Peel and the Irish Sea. You might even spot some seals and sharks below too!

Did you know that it's haunted too? 

Look out for Moddey Dhoo which is a ghostly apparition of a black dog which people say haunts the castle!
