About this activity

Big Pit National Coal Museum is a real coal mine and one of Britain's leading mining museums. With facilities to educate and entertain all ages, they offer an exciting and informative day out for the whole family!

You can enjoy a multi-media tour of the coal mine, with even a virtual miner in the galleries! They're also a variety of exhibitions located in the Pithead Baths and Historic colliery buildings. The Pithead Baths has four exhibition spaces and uses both objects and images to tell the story of coal mining in Wales.

You'll discover home life, children in mines, health and mining communities and go on a journey of how the work of a miner has changed from 1850 to 2000.

You'll also be able to enjoy an exciting audio-visual experience with exhibitions of modern mining equipment. The galleries house simulated underground workings and a multi-media presentation, and your visit will begin with a short film!

View a reconstructed power loading coal face, an undercutting machine and a hige chainsaw! The interactive exhibitions allow you to get up close to the stories. You'll see The Winding Engine House which raises and lowers the cages carrying coal and the blacksmiths yard which are some of the oldest buildings on the sit!

There's so much to discover and hands-on activities to get involved in which will provide hours of fun for the whole family.
