Caerphilly Castle is a striking testament to the turbulent times of medieval Wales. It was built in 1268 and is the second biggest castle in the whole of Britain. The massive walls, towers, gatehouses and sprawling water covers a total of 30 acres!
The castle is three times the size of the Welsh rugby stadium and it's a must visit if you're in the area. There are mazes to negotiate and a dragons den plus a great hall to wander round, it's a great chance to uncover the history!
The design of the castle is based on a concentric ring of walls, and has a ring of water defences and huge gatehouses. It's a striking testament to the Anglo Norman domination of the area.
Did you know there's also a famous leaning tower here too? It leans out 3m out of the perpendicular and has been doing so since 1648!
The castle holds exhibitions within the castle itself, so make sure to check it out when you're visiting! There's also a gift shop offering a range of products and guidebooks and lots of opportunities for some photos.
