About this activity

Speedwell Cavern is a remarkable underground attraction that has been captivating visitors for centuries. The cave system is believed to be over 350 million years old and is home to a stunning array of geological wonders, including the legendary Bottomless Pit.

The cave system was first discovered in 1775 by lead miners who were working in the area. They soon realized the significance of the cave system and began to explore it. Over time, the caves became more accessible to the public, and today, the Speedwell Cavern is one of the most popular attractions in the Peak District.

Visitors to the Speedwell Cavern can take a fascinating boat ride through the underground waterways, which were formed over thousands of years by the action of water on the limestone rock. The boat ride takes approximately 25 minutes and allows visitors to see the impressive formations up close, including stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones.

One of the highlights of the Speedwell Cavern is the Bottomless Pit, which is a deep vertical shaft that descends over 100 feet into the ground. Visitors can observe this incredible natural wonder from a safe distance, and it's truly a sight to behold. The Bottomless Pit was named by early explorers who believed that the pit was bottomless, although it's now known to be around 20 metres deep.

The tour of the cave system also includes a visit to the Grand Entrance, which is a magnificent underground chamber that measures around 200 feet in height. The chamber is adorned with impressive formations and is truly awe-inspiring.

Visitors to the Speedwell Cavern can also learn about the history of the cave system and the local area in the exhibition centre. The exhibition provides fascinating insights into the lives of the miners who first discovered the caves and the impact that the mining industry had on the local community.
