About this activity

The Blue John Cavern is steeped in history and is famous throughout the world for its unique and large deposites of Blue Jogn Stone. It has wonderful cave formations for the whole family to admire.

You'll be able to take a self-guided audio visit using your own smark phone and enjoy the amazing views across Hope Valley along the way. There's also a number of activities too! You can polish your own blue john stone which runs from February to October. Select, prepare and polish a stone to take home!

The Blue John Experience is hands on and you'll work with the Treak Cliff Cavern family and get involved with the stone. Learn about the formation of caves within the Peak District and meet the family who care for the mine! Go hunting for your own stone in the mining areas as the staff will guide you through polishing your own selection. You can make them into a window hanger or a fine piece of silver mounted jewellery!

The treak cliff museum features a permanent collection of blue john, samples and a look at the history and development of the working mine.  On display is jewellery drinking vessels and ornaments made by their own craftmen. Explore the history of mining and see raw samples of the stone before its shaped and formed too.
