About this activity

Poole's Cavern is a remarkable natural wonder located in the Peak District in Derbyshire, England. This limestone cave is known for its unique and intricate formations that have been sculpted over millions of years, making it a popular destination for tourists and locals alike.

The cave was formed during the Carboniferous period, over 300 million years ago, when the area was covered by a shallow sea. The sea was home to a variety of marine animals, including tiny planktonic organisms called coccoliths. As these organisms died, their remains fell to the sea floor and slowly accumulated to form thick layers of limestone.

Over time, the earth's tectonic plates shifted, causing the land to rise and the sea to recede. As the limestone was exposed to the air, it began to erode and dissolve, creating vast underground caverns and passages.

Poole's Cavern is a perfect example of this natural phenomenon, with its impressive stalactites, stalagmites, and flowstones. These formations have been shaped by the slow drip of water through the limestone over thousands of years, creating intricate and delicate sculptures that seem to defy gravity.

The cavern was first discovered by an Anglo-Saxon princess named Edith in the 9th century, who is said to have used the cave as a hermitage. It was later named after a local outlaw named Poole, who is said to have used the cave as a hideout in the 15th century.

Today, visitors to Poole's Cavern can explore the cave on guided tours led by knowledgeable and friendly staff. The tours take visitors through the winding passages of the cave, highlighting its unique features and fascinating history.

One of the most impressive sights in the cave is the Great Dome, a vast chamber that is over 14 meters high. This chamber is home to some of the largest stalactites and stalagmites in the cave, including the famous Flitch of Bacon, a massive flowstone that resembles a side of bacon.

Another highlight of the cave is the Fairy Queen's Chamber, a smaller chamber filled with delicate and intricate formations that seem to sparkle in the dim light. This chamber is said to have been a favorite of Queen Victoria, who visited the cave in 1851.
