There's plenty of things to do along the East Lancashire Railway. Whether you're an steam train enthusiast of heritage railways, or you simply want to have an exciting family day out, there is something for everyone! From the historic waiting rooms, to platforms and stunning scenery, there's lots to see and explore.
In total, there is 12 miles of scenery and seven different stops for you to hop off and explore the market towns. The seven stops include Heywood, Burrs Country Park, Summerseat, Ramsbottom, Irwell Vale, Rawtenstall and Bury.
Bury is a busy market town and is home to the Bury Transport Museum and the ELR operations. The Bury Bolton Street Station s a must-see and is a great example of rich heritage. Take your trip to the Bury Transport Museum too and see the incredible vehicles and interactive exhibits to complete your trip. There's also markets, museum and sculpture centres to explore too!
In Heywood you'll find Queen's Park which is a vast outdoor green space for the kids to run around in, you may even spot some wildlife along the way! If you fancy a burning off some energy , then Burrs Country Park is home to lots of nature trails, canoeing and more for an active adventure.
At Rawtenstall you can try your hand at skiing, at Ski Rossendale where you'll be able to head down a dry-ski slope and practice your skiing abilities.
Every stop is packed with history and you'll be able to learn more about the region. From the origins of the Co-op movement, to the grad mills and textile powerhouse, there's so much to get involved in and learn.
The railway has lots of events and experiences all year round. So, make sure you check the website before you visit so you know what's happening where and when!
There are seven different stations along the East Lancashire Railway, and you can start your journey at any one of them. If you’re travelling by car, we’d recommend either Heywood or Rawtenstall where there are large car parks and free parks and ride options.
Parking is available at all stations but is very limited in some places.
