About this activity

The Harley Foundation is a charitable trust which supports the visual arts and crafts.

It has created award-winning visitor attractions, a community of artist’s studios, and a vibrant event and education programme on the historic Welbeck estate.

Art exhibitions at The Harley Gallery show work from leading contemporary artists and makers and change quarterly. You might see amazing jewel-like glass, much-loved children’s book illustrations, or monumental sculptures. Exhibitions are shown over two gallery spaces and are accompanied by a display which explores the life and art of the Victorian 5th Duke of Portland, and our gallery shop.

The gallery shop is known for its exceptional range of work from contemporary craftspeople – including collector’s favourites such as Julie Arkell, Adam Frew, and Kyra Cane.

If you’re visiting with your family, there’s always something to do with the kids. Head to the creative space for an activity inspired by the exhibition - and come back soon as activities change regularly.

The gallery is breastfeeding friendly. Baby changing facilities are available next door in the museum.

Our art museum is dedicated to showing works from The Portland Collection. This is a world-class art collection which was built up by the Dukes of Portland and their families, who have owned Welbeck since 1607. It is a vast and varied accumulation of art, and the display changes every three years.

There is an astonishing selection of fine art and objects, which range from ancient Roman gems to the pearl earring that Charles I wore at his beheading. Artists include Van Dyck, Michelangelo, Marcus Gheerhaets, and Brueghal the Elder.

The art spaces are accompanied by the gallery shop specialising in contemporary craft from leading names and emerging makers. Visitors can also enjoy an Art Trail through the Welbeck countryside, family activities, events for all ages, with workshops and talks, school trips and at-home activities.

The Harley Pottery Studio is a welcoming place which everyone can visit for pottery classes. You can find it at the heart of the Foundation’s artist studios. Whether you’re a beginner looking for pottery classes with likeminded people, or you are an experienced potter who needs a pay-as-you-go studio space, our timetable will have something for you.

Our Pottery Studio is a community space where visitors can work in inspiring surroundings – in an idyllic countryside location and surrounded by practicing artists and makers.
