Lewes Castle is a Norman castle built after the Battle of Hastings by supporting of William the Conquerorr. If you're in the area, it's a great castle to visit to uncover the history with spectacular views across Sussex.
On your visit, climb the steps to the top of the keep to enjoy stunning views across Sussex, remember to bring your camera so you can snap some photos! Explore the history of the 950 year old fortrees and learn how it played a key role in the development of the town.
Next door to the castle, you'll find the museum of sussex archaeology where you can see artefacts from prehistoric to medieval Sussex, plus lots of temporary exhibitions that showcase some exciting treasures.
At the museum you'll be able to watch the story of Lewes through a model of the town and short film too. Make sure to look out for talks and workshops throughout the year too as they help to bring the story to life!
Why not bring a picnic and enjoy it in the castle gardens? You may even be able to spot the special cannon in the grounds too!
Lewes is easily accessed from the A27, A26 and A275. Drivers using the A27 should enter the town from the eastern end of the Lewes by-pass via the Cuilfail Tunnel. Car parking and coach parking are available in the town.

Bring a picnic with you and enjoy it in the gardens
The historic nature of the castle site means access is limited to ground level for anyone who has difficulty walking. There is an accessible pavilion in the Gun Garden with panels depicting the panorama visible from the top of the keep.
