About this activity

Volks Electric Railway is a narrow-gauge railway located in the seaside resort town of Brighton, East Sussex, England. It is the oldest operating electric railway in the world, having first opened to the public in 1883.

The railway runs along the seafront for just over a mile, connecting the Palace Pier with Black Rock. It was originally built as a tourist attraction and a means of transportation for visitors to the beach. Today, it is still a popular tourist attraction and a unique way to see the seafront.

The railway has a number of historic carriages, some of which date back to the early 20th century, and all of which have been restored and maintained over the years. The carriages run on a narrow-gauge track and are powered by electricity from a third rail.

The railway operates from Easter to late September, and there are usually trains running every 15 minutes. The journey takes around 20 minutes, and there are stops along the way where passengers can get off and explore the seafront.

Visitors to the railway can learn about its history and see some of the original carriages at the Volks Electric Railway Museum, which is located near the Aquarium station. The museum has exhibits and displays about the railway and its role in Brighton's history.
