About this activity

Carisbrooke Castle is at the heart of the Isle of Wight and was once an artillery fortress, king's prison and a royal summer residence. It's a romantic castle with plenty to see along the way and panoramic views that can be seen from the castle walls.

You'll be able to play bowls on the green that were once used by a defeated king or try and fnd the rooms where King Charles I tried to escape from when he was imprisoned in the castle! The castle and grounds are well-preserved and has survived for more than 800 years! Even seeing off the Spanish Armada!

Children can dress up as Norman soldiers or Civil War troopers in the gatehouse for a real immersive experience .

One of the highlights here are the castle's resident donkeys. Watch the daily demonstrations working the 16th century tread wheel to raise the water from the bottom of the well.

There's also a short film hosted by Jupiter the cartoon donkey where you'll get to hear more about their story.

Climb the steep steps up the castle mound and enjoy views from the ancient castle keep. You can walk right around the castle on the battlements and see across the island.

Imagine what life was like as a medieval soldier, try on armour and even have a go at firing a mini-cannon in the gatehouse.

There's also the castle museum which is filled with memorabilia and changing exhibitions throughout the year. You'll get to learn much more here and is a great addition to your day out at the castle.
