About this activity

There are some truly iconic organisations in Australia, and possibly the most iconic is of course the Royal Flying Doctor Service, also known as the RFDS.

Today, you can actual visit this tourist facility and learn all about its founding by Reverend John Flynn, and how it started life as an NT aero medical operations all the way back in 1939!

Kids can hear all about the heroic tales of the early days and years after as the RFDS grew to what it is today. The whole family can learn all about the rich history of the Royal Flying Doctor Service, and the tasks and responsibilities of the numerous pilots, engineers, doctors and nurses!

You can also hear all about the experiences of the many patients who were carried and cared for each day.

Kids can hear fascinating virtual reality stories and actually see what its like to fly with a RFDS pilot.

They can experience a life size hologram of John Flynn himself, AND you can even see a real life decommissioned RFDS Pilatus PC 12 aircraft which you can peek inside!

The second iconic story you will hear about at the Royal Flying Doctor Service is all about the Bombing of Darwin in February 1942.

This infamous bombing of the harbour brought a terrible destruction to the city of Darwin, and it's at this facility the family can learn this important series of events, as well as the many of the experiences and stories of what actually happened that day.

A fascinating day out in Darwin!
