About this activity

History comes to life at Lancaster Castle, where you can explore the rich history, including origins dating back almost 1,000 years!

Lancaster Castle is a Grade 1 Listed Building tht occupies a city-centre hilltop location, that also happens to be on the very site of three successive Roman forts!

In fact, the castle has been described by English Heritage as "not only the North-West's most important historic and archaeological monument but also of international importance".

During your time at Lancaster Castle, you can join one of the tours and learn all about England's dark history, with tales of persecution and incarceration, as well as punishment and execution! All of these and more have occured over the centuries within the confines of Lancaster Castle, and now YOU can learn all about it.

Don't miss really taking in the magnificent John o'Gaunt gates which have been swung open to unlock a veritable vault of intrigue and interest for families of all ages!

Lancaster Castle is also often known as John O’ Gaunt’s Castle, and really is is one of the most historically fascinating surviving buildings in the country.

Today, it's owned by the Duchy of Lancaster (Fun fact: His Majesty King Charles III is the Duke of Lancaster), and the castle really has witnessed incredible scenes of significant historical, cultural and political importance over the centuries.

From incidents of religious persecution, the trials of the Lancashire Witches and over 200 executions (eeek!) for everything from murder to stealing cattle. Doesn't sound like a great time to be alive? does it!?

A fascinating day out where kids can actually LIVE history, all waiting for you at Lancaster Castle - with family friendly events too!
