About this activity

Some of the most iconic literary works all stemmed from the one writer - Jane Austen. From Pride and Prejudice, Sense and Senibility, & Emma, Austen's work has stood the test of time from her books, into TV series, movies, adaptations and more - and now YOU can visit the very home she lived in whilst she wrote these masterpieces!

Jane Austen's House is today a fascinating museum and fitting tribute to the icon, but was once where Austen lived for the last eight years of her life. It was also here that she wrote, revised and had published all six of her globally beloved novels: Northanger Abbey, Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Mansfield Park, and Persuasion.

During your time at the museum you can see first hand an unparalleled collection of Austen treasures and items that she actually used in her lifetime, including furniture, paintings and household objects.

Kids can actually be inspired as they see with their very own eyes Jane’s personal letters and priceless first editions of her novels! What kind of jewellery do you think she might have worn? You can find out at Jane Austen's House!

It's a great way to also really experience what life during her years would have been like, with portraits of her friends and family, and the tiny writing table at which she wrote.

Visit the sunny Drawing Room where Austen practiced the piano every morning, which is also the room where she read Pride and Prejudice aloud to a neighbour on the very day she received her first copy!

Take a stroll through the vibrant green Dining Room where she wrote those iconic novels, and the cosy bedroom upstairs that it is believed she shared with her sister Cassandra.

As well as period rooms, Jane Austen's House includes ‘museum rooms’ where you'll find the precious items on display in secure display cases.

Don't miss any temporary exhibits that the museum put on too!

Kids, after a visit to Jane Austen's House, maybe you're inspired to write your very own masterpiece?
