Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary really is one of the best and most reliable wildlife viewing areas on Kangaroo Island. Here, a number of beautiful creatures call it home, with koalas, kangaroos, and wallabies, as well as those echidnas, goannas, Cape Barren geese, and even over 40 other species of birds!
There are two tours you can choose from. First you have the 90 minute Guided Koala Walk and Bush Fire Ecology Tour These in their “supervised only” areas.
Their knowledgable guides will take you out on an unforgettable personalised vist to experience the remarkable fauna and flora, as you learn all about their abundant species and their important response to bushfire.
Also available at the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary is a 120 minute Sunset Nocturnal Tour. This fully guided walk takes you out with one of their experienced tour guides on your own private exclusive tour!
Kids will love discovering and learning about the nocturnal animals of Kangaroo Island in their natural habitat and environment.
The Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary and cabins are a 90 minute (140 kilometre) drive from Penneshaw and a 60 minute (100 kilometre) drive from Kingscote via South Coast Road( travel times are longer from late afternoon until mid morning due to wildlife activity) .
Take the South Coast Road for 80.5 km from the airport intersection. At the 76km mark there is a dirt road to Hanson Bay Cabins. Please remain on the South Coast Road and go another 4km for the sanctuary. Look for the Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary sign. Follow the dirt driveway and stop in at the visitor centre/cafe.

Severely impacted by the 2020 fires, Kangaroo Island is still recovering. Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary have been instrumental in helping with the rehabilitation of wildlife, and booking a tour or a cabin visit helps support their incredible work.
There is a cafe at the Visitor Centre!
Bring your camera, water bottle and binoculars. Please dress appropriately for a walk in the bush ie wear closed in shoes and no exposed ankles, preferably long pants.
They have six self-contained beach-side holiday cabins as well as many opportunities to see the native wildlife if you want to stay for longer!
