The USA has come pretty incredible events in history - both good and bad - but what's special about some of them, is that you can actually learn about them from the VERY PLACE they happened! Talk about making history FUN!
Musgrove Mill State Historic Site is located in the Piedmont woods in South Carolina, and marks the location of that bloody Battle of Musgrove Mill which occurred way back in August, 1780. (A pretty long time ago!)
It was part of the Revolutionary War, where the Patriots and the Loyalists battled it out, and now is the perfect place for the kids to learn about this important event.
The site itself has detailed interpretive signage in the visitor center, which really gives you an insight into what went down right under your feet. The Visitor Center is always a great place to start your visit, as it's sets the scene for you.
Musgrove Mill State Historic Site also has two and a half mile of nature trails with information signposted along the way too, so you can explore the area and still learn. There are natural features of the park which include the Enoree River and Horseshoe Falls, along which a lot of the fighting actually took place.
The site holds special events across the year, and living history programs are always popular with kids.
The park in which the site is located is also a great way to spend a full day, with it's boating and boating access where you can launch onto the Enoree River, and picnic areas to enjoy lunch at. There are even several geocaches located on the park!
