What is there to do?

The Grotto is a composite of nine separate Grottos, each portraying a scene in the life of Christ. The Grotto includes the largest collection of precious stones and gems found anywhere in one location. The artistry has to be seen to be appreciated, plus the message it gives is beyond words. It is frequently considered as the "Eighth Wonder of the World." The Grotto has been placed on the National Register of Historical Places in 2001. The Iowan Magazine has described the Grotto as a "Miracle in Stone".

Our Guided tours through the Grotto are approximately one hour in length, which includes a geological lecture in our Rock Display Studio. Group Tours can be arranged by appointment any time of the year. Tours are given on a daily basis from May 1st through Oct 16th. The first tour of the day begins at 10am. We ask for $5.00 per adult and $2.50 per child to help preserve the Grotto. Our church is open to the public to visit Father Dobberstien's Christmas Chapel.

The mission of the Grotto of the Redemption is to present in stone the whole story of the fall of woman and man, our Divine redemption through Christ, and Mary's presence in the redemptive process. As Father Dobberstien commented, "If your messages are carved in stone they are well nigh imperishable. The imperishableness is the outstanding feature of the Grotto." Our purpose is to preserve that imperishability and see that the Grotto of the Redemption will continue to tell its story.
