About this activity

Birling Gap is a hidden gem located along the East Sussex coast, nestled between the famous Beachy Head and the charming town of Eastbourne. This picturesque destination is a must-visit for families who are looking for a fun-filled day out in the great outdoors.

The first thing that will strike you when you arrive at Birling Gap is the breathtaking view of the white cliffs that stretch out along the coastline. The chalk cliffs, which are over 500 feet tall, are a sight to behold and provide the perfect backdrop for a family picnic or a game of catch.

For families with young children, the beach at Birling Gap is a real highlight. The pebble beach is a great place to build sandcastles, collect shells, and explore rock pools. The clear water is also perfect for paddling, and there are plenty of spots to take a refreshing dip on a hot summer's day.

But it's not just the beach that makes Birling Gap a great destination for families. The area is also home to some of the most stunning walks in the UK. The South Downs Way, which runs through the area, offers a variety of different routes that are suitable for all ages and abilities. Whether you want a gentle stroll along the clifftops or a more challenging hike through the hills, there's something for everyone.

One of the most popular walks in the area is the Seven Sisters walk. This 13.6km route takes you along the top of the Seven Sisters cliffs, offering incredible views of the English Channel and the surrounding countryside. The walk is relatively easy, with only a few steep climbs, but it can be a bit of a challenge for younger children. However, with a little bit of encouragement and some snacks to keep them going, most kids will be able to complete the walk with a smile on their face.

For families who are looking for a more relaxed day out, Birling Gap also has plenty of attractions to keep everyone entertained. The National Trust Visitor Centre is a great place to start, with plenty of interactive exhibits that teach you about the history of the area.

If you're feeling adventurous, you can also try your hand at some of the outdoor activities on offer in the area. Kayaking and paddleboarding are popular options, and there are plenty of companies that offer guided tours along the coast. If you prefer to keep your feet on the ground, you can also hire bikes and explore the area on two wheels.
