Its function is to provide world-class observing facilities for Australian optical astronomers.
Which means - it's pretty impressive!
Why spend your next family day out exploring the land, when you can explore space! It's a great way to kids to really learn about the Universe, the sun, the stars, the solar system, the planets, and really gain a first hand look at what that amazing thing is that we are surrounded by!
The observatory still is a research facility, so they don't operate in the evenings, but you still can visit the exhibits and learn all about the new discoveries being made!
Also at Siding Spring Observatory, there is a visitors' gallery and exhibition area open to the public which also incorporates a cafe and souvenir shop. During NSW school holidays, guided tours of the site are offered.
Siding Spring Observatory is located atop Mt Woorut (~1160m) at the end of Observatory Road, 27km west of Coonabarabran
