Where are we going today?

Indoor climbing is an incredible way for kids to really stay active, as well as develop important skills such as balance, coordination, and strength. (They just don't realize how much it's a benefit to them when they are having fun challenging themselves!)

Santa Fe Climbing Center is Northern New Mexico's ONLY indoor climbing center, so it's certainly the place to be!

Indoor rock climbing is so good for kids. It teaches them balance, coordination, and really lets them set their own goals...and achive them! The different colored holds in the climbing wall each represent a different difficulty of climb, so they can really start from the most easy, then work their way up to eventually achieving the hardest. What a great way to measure their improvements!

The Santa Fe Climbing Center has a bouldering room, which is perfect for those smaller kids because there are no ropes needs. Don't be scared, parents - that's because the holds are so close to the very cushy mat below! It's very safe. There is also a top rope / lead climbing room with a great selection of routes for all levels - from beginner to experienced.

Don't think you can do it? Don't be silly! First of all, it's for ages 5 and up, so the whole family can get involved - and climb on the same walls! If you can climb a ladder, you will be fine!

You can also take an intro to climbing course and learn the ropes and techniques, to really improve

Once you realize indoor climbing is for you, you can join the climbing classes, or perhaps join the youth camps and climbing teams! There are also outdoor adventures throughout the state!

So get those limbs warmed up - and get climbing!

I'm in a love/hate relationship with this gym. It's great to have a climbing gym right in the heart of town, but honestly, it's very difficult to actually train when you climb there. I'm in a love/hate relationship with this gym. It's great to have a climbing gym right in the heart of town, but honestly, it's very difficult to actually train when you climb there. It's very crowded, both with people and wall surface area, and there are seldom times that the gym is actually open when it isn't full of either kids or adults. It is difficult to really train on the bouldering wall because it's so crowded that you don't want to monopolize a part of the wall when there is very little available climbing surface area, and there's always the danger of falling on little kids that are inevitably running around, or adults for that matter. What's more, rarely are there few enough people so that you can use the campus boards/hang boards without asking people to move. There are definitely times that I feel unsafe climbing there, with how packed it can be in there.

All that being said, the staff are always psyched, routes are changed fairly frequently, and the people there are pretty friendly. They recently got a couple auto-belays which are great. They have comps regularly, and they also have a good selection of climbing gear for sale at fair prices. I hope that they figure out a way to expand the available climbing area, even if that means changing the location. It really is too crowded, especially when there are after-school programs, climbing teams, and regulars all squeezing in trying to climb.
