I’m in a love/hate relationship with this gym. It’s great to have a climbing gym right in the heart of town, but honestly, it’s very difficult to actually train when you climb there. It’s very crowded, both with people and wall surface area, and there are seldom times that the gym is actually open when it isn’t full of either kids or adults. It is difficult to really train on the bouldering wall because it’s so crowded that you don’t want to monopolize a part of the wall when there is very little available climbing surface area, and there’s always the danger of falling on little kids that are inevitably running around, or adults for that matter. What’s more, rarely are there few enough people so that you can use the campus boards/hang boards without asking people to move. There are definitely times that I feel unsafe climbing there, with how packed it can be in there. All that being said, the staff are always psyched, routes are changed fairly frequently, and the people there are pretty friendly. They recently got a couple auto-belays which are great. They have comps regularly, and they also have a good selection of climbing gear for sale at fair prices. I hope that they figure out a way to expand the available climbing area, even if that means changing the location. It really is too crowded, especially when there are after-school programs, climbing teams, and regulars all squeezing in trying to climb.
