In 1982, a group of Davis, California community members established a single focus — to provide a new approach to teaching children and their families about science. Since that time, Explorit has grown into a reputable and experienced organization (a Nature Center and a Science Center), four vehicles, and multiple science programs being provided in over 17 Northern California counties. Explorit’s unique teaching style allows for increased interest and lasting curiosity through hands-on science education and inquiry-based activities that complement formal education. Our interdisciplinary focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities provides for interactive exploration and youth development that support our mission to “to ignite and foster a curiosity about science and nature through inquiry and discovery.” Major activities for Explorit include science and health education programs for the general public, schools and community groups both on site at our science center and through our traveling science programs. We have recently added a pilot program to our arsenal of science education in the form of a Community Science Project. It is structured around citizen science, which advances science itself, and the public understanding of both science and of the scientific process. These projects use the time, abilities and energies of a community, county or several areas, of citizen scientists who are our collaborators. One of the most exciting components to our Community Science Project is that anyone can participate from anywhere. There really are no boundaries. From the beginning of our organization to today we have been focused on igniting a lasting curiosity about science and supplementing STEM learning in schools and at our center. Explorit’s programs instill confidence, enrich people’s lives, inspire appreciation of our world, empower people to make informed choices and encourage stewardship of the earth’s resources.
