About this activity

Saxtead Green Post Mill is one of the most charming and unique attractions in the beautiful county of Suffolk! This historic windmill has been standing tall for over 200 years and has now been beautifully restored, making it the perfect spot for a fun and educational family day out.

One of the things that makes Saxtead Green Post Mill so special is its fascinating history. The mill was built in 1796 and was originally used to grind wheat into flour for the local community. It's amazing to think that such an old machine is still standing today and is even able to grind flour using the same traditional methods that were used all those years ago.

When you first arrive at Saxtead Green Post Mill, you'll be struck by just how picturesque the surroundings are. The mill is set in a stunning location, with rolling hills, fields of wildflowers, and a babbling brook all around. It's the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life and enjoy some fresh air and tranquility.

Of course, the mill itself is the main attraction, and you'll be able to explore it in detail during your visit. The building is made up of four floors, and you can climb up to the top to get an incredible view of the surrounding countryside. As you wander around the mill, you'll be able to see all the different parts of the machinery, including the huge sails, the massive grindstones, and the intricate gears that make it all work.

One of the best things about Saxtead Green Post Mill is that it's not just a static museum exhibit - it's a working windmill that you can see in action. If the wind is strong enough, you might even be lucky enough to see the sails start turning and watch as the mill starts grinding flour. It's an amazing sight and really gives you a sense of just how powerful and impressive these machines were in their heyday.

But there's more to Saxtead Green Post Mill than just the mill itself. The surrounding gardens are also well worth exploring. There are plenty of paths and trails to follow, and you'll come across all sorts of interesting plants and wildlife along the way. Kids will love spotting butterflies, birds, and other creatures, and there are plenty of benches and picnic spots where you can stop for a rest and take in the view.
