Orford Ness is an internationally important coastal nature reserve, with lots of military history to uncover. From taking a trip along the river, walking trails and visiting the establishment sites, there's lots to do for the whole family.
In total, there is over 10 miles of coastline and over 2,000 acres of land with lots of varied habitas. Start you visit on the board as you glide across the River Ore. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for wildlife too, including seals. Just remember to book your ticket in advance!
There are three walking trails which take you through the area and is home to water deer, sheep and hares too. The area is a delicate landscape and 20% of Europe's vegetaed shingle is found here! Visit the airfield Marshes which was once a formed airfield, and is now filled with flocks of sheep and rare breeds.
As you walk through Orford Ness, you'll be greeted by lots of military buildings. The bomb ballistics building was built in 1933, and provides a panoramic viewing platform which gives stunning views across the site.
There's also the Black Beacon which has an exhibition and the Radard Receiver Building which also hosts an exhibition that tells the story of 80 years of top secret research here.
