Dunguaire Castle was built in 1520 on the shores of Galway Bay and has ots of history to uncover as you head out on a castle tour.
The castle gives an insight into the lifestyle of the people who lives in it from 1520 all the way to modern times. The picturesque location adds to the atmosphere!
The castle has a 75 foot tower and a defensive wall and is the most photographed castle in Ireland!
In 1924, the castle was brought and repaired by Oliver Gogarty who was a famous surgeon and literary figure at the time. It then became a meeting point for literary revivalists such as Yearts and George Bernard Shaw.
In 1954 the castle was then taken over by Christobel Amptill who completed the restoration.
You can wander inside and around the castle, stop for a picnic or just look out across to the shores for a picture perfect moment!
During April -October each year, the castle hosts medieval banquets where you can enjoy a four course meal, accompanies by songs, stories and peoms for an immersive experience!
The castle welcomes school tours and the class will xperience what life was like in the castle and hear about the past residents, as well as a range of Irish History too! It's both a fun and educational day out.
