About Boyle Abbey
Boyle Abbey was founded in the twelfth century by monks and was one of the most powerful of te early Cistercian foundations in Ireland. Despite all the violence is has suffered over the years, it is well preserved and will impress all visitors.
The gatehouse has been restored and turned into an inteprestive centre where you'll learn more about the abbey's gripping history. Hear about the abbey's colourful past on a guided tour and marvel at the architecture as you wander past the arches which are made in an unusual transitional style.
Spot the enigmatic Sheela-na-gig, there's one in the left-hand corner as you enter the building, and the other is further along the nave. See if you can find out the purpose of the carvings!
Witness the skills of the craftspeople who restored the abbey and learn how the north wall was rebuilt by the experts. Just near the church you can admire Abbeytown Bridge which is the oldest surviving stone bridges in Ireland, with spectacular views.
There's lots of history around every corner, with some fascinating exhibitions.
