About this activity

Petworth House and Park is an enchanting and historic country estate located in the town of Petworth, West Sussex, England. The estate is a popular destination for families, thanks to its grand stately home, beautifully landscaped gardens, and extensive parkland.

Petworth House is a grand and majestic stately home that offers visitors a glimpse into the lives of the aristocracy in the 17th and 18th centuries. The house was originally built in the late 17th century and has since been expanded and renovated over the centuries. Today, it is a magnificent example of English Baroque architecture, with grand rooms decorated with ornate plasterwork, elaborate carvings, and priceless artworks. Visitors to Petworth House can explore the grand state rooms, including the Great Hall, the Carved Room, and the Marble Hall, which boasts a magnificent staircase and a stunning collection of sculptures.

The estate boasts one of the largest and most significant art collections in the country, with works by some of the most renowned artists in history. The collection includes works by JMW Turner, Van Dyck, Reynolds, Gainsborough, and many others. For families, this is a fantastic opportunity to introduce children to some of the greatest artists in history and to inspire a love of art and culture.

In addition to the house itself, Petworth Park is a vast and beautiful landscape that covers over 700 acres. The park was designed by the famous landscape architect, Capability Brown, and features a stunning lake, rolling hills, and ancient woodlands. The park is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including deer, foxes, and birds of prey. Families can explore the park on foot, on bike, or by horseback, and enjoy a picnic or a leisurely stroll in the fresh air.

Another great reason to visit Petworth House and Park is the many family-friendly events that take place throughout the year. From Easter egg hunts to outdoor theatre performances, there is always something fun and engaging for families to enjoy.

For families with younger children, Petworth House and Park offers a variety of activities and resources to help engage children and make their visit enjoyable and educational. The estate offers children's trails and activity packs, which are designed to encourage children to explore the house and park in a fun and interactive way.
