The Lynn Meadows Discovery Center LOVES to inspire children, and their families, through a range of interactive educational experience and exploration, as well as the arts.
They are also a museum with a difference - breaking the rules of a "traditional" museum, and encouraging visitors to talk, touch, interact, and HAVE FUN - just like the 400 children's museum across the nation!
The discovery center is actually located in a renovated Mississippi City Elementary School, dating back to 1915 (so the architecture is worth a visit on its own!). Once inside, there is 15,000 sq ft of indoor exhibit space to explore, AND 7 1/2 acres of outdoor play space!
There's a super colossal climbing structure that spans the height of the museum, and allows kids to reach for the stars! It is also a fun way for kids to travel from floor to floor as they explore the exhibits!
Creative kids can express themselves in the art studio, where creativity is encouraged through fun, educational projects, that often relate to current holidays, historical events or special activities taking place in the museum.
Those little ones under 4 years can enjoy Bear Camp Bayou, with toys and books geared towards those important years of development, whilst the older kids can don those costume and props and take themselves back to a time when trains were a popular form of transportation!
The role play fun continues for kids in the veterinary clinic, or work on a boat in the Mississippi Gulf Coast! Kids might want to take to the plains of Africa on Safari, work in an 1890s Mississippi Hotel, shop in a market for produce, or work on science experiments - whatever they choose, are long as they have those inquisitive minds and their imaginations, they will be just fine!
