About this activity

It's time to step back in time at the Keeler Tavern Museum!

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, this great Connecticut museum has a fascinating history, and one you can re-live first hand! It spent it's life as a farmhouse, and a tavern, as well as a stagecoach stop, a post office, a private home and even a hotel. Phew! It's been busy!

Then, during 1966, it became a museum and ever since, families have been learning and enjoying their time exploring the museum collections, and now it's your turn!

The museum is decorated with period furnishings, so kids can really feel what life was like back many years ago. The stories come to life as costumed guides take you on a 45 minute tour through rooms that recreate the rural Connecticut life from the early 18th century to mid 20th century. They may even show you the cannonball that is still lodged in an outer wall of the museum!

The exhibits in the museum change too, so if you want to visit again there will be something new to see!

During your time at the Keeler Museum, you will also take a tour of the classic Cass Gilbert Garden house, which was built for his wife back in 1915 and overlooks a beautiful garden.

So kids, are you ready to step into the history books and learn what life was like even before your parents time? Here's a hint - you won't find any phones or computers!
