Sandal Castle was a favourite castle of Richard III and played its part in the War of the Roses. There's plenty of things to do whilst you're here whether its exploring the ruins, enjoying the views or learning something new.
The castle was the scene of the Battle of Wakefield in 1460 and you'll enjoy fantastic views from the castle across the city and the Calder Valley.
Sit and enjoy the views over Pugneys Lake and learn something new by reading the history boards around the site. You can explore the ruins and imagine what life was like here.
Remains of the 13th century stone castle and motte and bailey can still be seen today, and you can climb the steps to the top of the motte too. Have a stroll around the castle grounds and imagine you are a king or queen!
