Wentworth Castle Gardens
About Wentworth Castle Gardens
Wentworth Castle Gardens has gardens, woodlands and parklakes for everyone to enjoy! Explore the gothic Stainborough Castle and marvel at the medieval turrets and explore 500 acres of rolling parklands and landmarks with lots of wildlife.
The ancient castle is the crowning glory and was completed in 1731 by Thomas Wentworth. Today it's a peaceful place to enjoy a picnic as you're surrounded by the vast turrets. The garnd castle is at the centre and is not regularly open to the public and it has undergone many changes over the years. Today, it's home to Northern College which is a pioneering adult education institution.
There's also so many gardens within a garden! The Union Jack Garden was created by Thomas Wentworth to showcase his wealth and status, and has criss-cross patterns to represent the union jack. The Victorian Convervatory is an impressive place with unusual and exotic plants and it was the first places in the country to have electric lighting too!
The gardens are an oasis of clam. Lady Lucy's Walk has towering lime trees stretching through the garden and were first planted around the time of the First World War.
The gardens are a haven for lots of wildlife including deer. There's around 150 deers in total and in June and July they'l start giving both so you might seen some fawns or calfs!
For kids, there's a playground too! Zoom along the zip-line and navigate your way around the obstacles and burn off some energy! Stop off at the cafe for a hot drink and bite to eat and don't forget to browse through the second-hand bookshop too!
