Bath is famous for - and even named after - those famous Roman Baths that draw hundreds of thousands of visitors a year from all over the world.

Located in the valley of the River Avon, Bath actually became a spa back in 60AD when the Romans build baths and a temple in this valley, however the Romans were aware of hot springs in the area long before.

There is also archealogical evidence that long before a Bath was built, the land was treated as a shrine during the British Iron Age.

After the initial Bath was built in 60AD, the entire bathing complex was built across the next three centuries.

During what is thought to be the 3rd century AD, Bath was given defensive walls, but it was in the 5th century AD that these defenses failed, and the baths began to fall into a state of disrepair, and eventually were lost to rising sea levels and the elements.

Some say the original baths were destroyed in 6th century AD, however the stunning baths you see today range from the 12th century to 18th century.

The 9th century saw the town enjoy a remodel in its layout, with the original Roman street patterns lost, and later during the English Civil War, Bath was garissoned for King Charles I.

By 1801, Bath was one of the largest cities in the UK, and today is one of the most popular to visit - and it's well worth a visit!
