About San Antonio Zoo

San Antonio has a very WILD side, and it can be found at the San Antonio Zoo! This iconic zoo offers an exciting and educational experience for families. Did you know that San Antonio's first zoo was a small collection of animals in San Pedro Park in the 1800s? It's pretty amazing to think about how far it's come!

In 1914, Colonel George W. Brackenridge, a prominent local figure, gifted the city a collection of animals, including buffalo, elk, deer, and even lions. This collection led to the creation of the San Antonio Zoo as we know it today. Now, you and your family can be part of this rich history!

Today, the San Antonio Zoo is home to over 8,500 animals representing 779 species across 56 acres. It's a haven for animal lovers and a fantastic place for kids to learn about wildlife from all corners of the globe. Kids will particularly enjoy the Africa Live! exhibit, where they can see hippos and Nile crocodiles up close with stunning underwater views.

The Friedrich Aquarium offers a glimpse into the underwater world with both freshwater and saltwater creatures, while the Reptile House showcases some of the most intriguing reptiles on the planet. For a hands-on experience, the Fun Farm petting zoo is perfect for kids to interact with adorable domestic animals.

The zoo is also home to three species of bears, beautiful cats like leopards and caracals, and the majestic African lions. Children will be fascinated by the playful gibbons and can imagine themselves on the savanna with zebras and giraffes. For the youngest explorers, Nature Spot is a delightful play area designed for kids under five to dig, climb, and explore the wonders of nature.

With daily feedings and exciting events throughout the year, the San Antonio Zoo offers endless opportunities for family fun. So, what are you waiting for? Plan your visit and enjoy a wild family day out!
